FEP tubing is available in three different versions. Transparent FEP tubing in lengths of 1 meter stretches, red FEP tubing in free length and also the transparent thin FEP tubing for the MAB 8/10 probes. FEP tubing in 1 meter stretches has an dead volume of 1,2 µl per 10 cm while the red FEP tubing is specified at an ID of 0,15 ± 0,05 mm. It means a bigger dead volume per length unit but this may not be critical in all experimental setups. FEP tubing |
FEP tubing is commonly used in microdialysis. Due to the characteristics of the Teflon type of polymer it is less “sticky” than other polymers. This is important when recovering substances that tend to stick to all materials that it comes in contact with. Fine and exact inner diameters make it possible to calculate dead volumes by just cutting a piece of the tubing, measuring it and multiply the centimeters with 0,12 and the dead volume in µl of this particular piece of tubing is given. Depending on the application it may be fine to use the red version on the probe inlet side. Not always is the dead volume critical and the cost of the red tubing is less than the better specified transparent FEP tubing. In an awake animal setup with a lot of tubing it may also be helpful to color code the inlet and the outlet. The MAB 8/10 FEP tubing has the better specified inner diameter but is only 0,4 mm in OD. It means that the wall thickness is less and subsequently is the weight and volume of this tubing smaller. FEP tubing connect to syringe tips, swivels, fraction collectors, probes etc by using tubing adapters. The red FEP tubing is not transparent and it is not possible to see anything through it while the transparent versions are possible to see through easily. |
Transparent and red FEP tubing |
· Well specified inner diameters · Non ”sticky” material · Easy to calculate dead volume · Connects quickly using Tubing Adapters · Cutting is done using a sharp razor blade · Different versions depending on application |
Tubing Adapters |
Tubing Adapters are small connecting devices used for connecting a probe to the FEP tubing. Two versions fitting the regular FEP tubing are available and one version that fit the MAB 8/10 FEP tubing. The red and blue versions have the larger inner diameter and as with the red FEP tubing these are typically used for color coding the inlet/outlet in a system. If it is desired to use transparent FEP tubing only in a system it is helpful to use either blue or red tubing adapters on inlet/outlet respectively. For the MAB 8/10 products there is only a green version of the tubing adapter available at the moment.

Red, Blue and MAB 10 Tubing Adapters |
The Tubing Adapters connects to FEP tubing, probe, pump syringe, swivel etc in a way so that there is no dead volume in the actual connection. Soaking the Tubing Adapters in alcohol for a few minutes will make them expand. It is now easy to slide them onto the FEP tubing. Wait a few minutes and the alcohol will evaporate causing the Tubing Adapter to shrink. It now sits tight to whatever it has been connected to. If attention has been paid to make the FEP tubing inside the Tubing Adapter meet with the syringe needle etc there will not be any dead space present in the Tubing Adapter. Tubing Adapters should not be left in alcohol for storing since this will remove the shrinking effect of the material. . |
· Expand in alcohol · Shrink when left in the air · Connects with no dead volume · Tight fit once shrunk · Color coding possible · Flanged ends simplifies connections |
Sample Vials and Caps |
Collecting microdialysis manually or in a fraction collector are common ways of obtaining samples for analysis. The Sample Vials fit with most fraction collectors used in microdialysis. They also work in many HPLC autosamplers directly or via using vial inserts. Typically the vials can hold max. 300 µl of volume which usually is far more than needed for sample collection. Two types are available depending on what type of sample that is to be collected. The polystyrene version is similar to glass in appearence and also in characteristics. Good properties regarding minimal sample loss due to evaporation. Critical when collecting small volumes at low flow rates. The polypropylene version is known for being non ”sticky” which make them better suited for compounds that tend to attach to materials.

Sample Vials and Caps |
The vials can be used for collecting sample with or without the re-sealing caps. If using a fraction collector for the sampling some units can be configurated for the use of caps. It is also possible to put on aluminium type of crimp caps with separate septas. A clear advantage of using re-sealing caps is that air cannot enter into the vial after the sample collection has been completed. A sharp steel cannula will slide through the santopren in the cap which will seal back once the cannula is withdrawn. The cannula reaches the bottom of the vial so that even small volumes of samples can be collected. Vials and caps stand freezing and we recommend that he vials are stored in the freezer in a standing position. |

PEEK tubing |
PEEK tubing is available as an alternative to the FEP tubing. This tubing comes in 1 metre lengths and with 0,12 mm inner diameter. The outer diameter fits with the regular Tubing Adapters ( red, blue and the MAB 8 Connectors ). Subsequently the tubing dead volume may be calculated by measuring the length of tubing connected in the system. Every 10 cm of tubing represents 1,2 µl of dead volume.

Vial Labels NEWS!! |
The Vial Labels come in sheets of 50 numbered labels per sheet. There are eight different colors and each color come in sheets with framed numbers and numbers without frame. It means 16 x 50 = 400 unique labeling possibilities in each package. An optional rack is available for easier mounting of the labels to the vials. The labels are designed to fit 300 µl vials commonly used in microdialysis and other laboratory sampling. Vials with an outer diameter of 5,5 mm can be labeled with these vial labels. The small size of the label flag make them fit into small compartment fraction collectors and autosamplers.
